Self improvement aims to bring out the best version of oneself: this condition helps manage every aspect of one’s life autonomously proactively and positively. The idea is to improve aspects of the personal sphere to enhance professional performance. Nowadays, it’s realized how psychological and physical well-being positively influence an individual’s work performance, making it useful to pay attention to everyday aspects that can be improved for greater personal satisfaction.
In this article, I will be analyzing the following themes:
- what is meant by self improvement
- why it’s important to develop it
- the most common goals of self improvement
- how to enhance it.
What is self improvement
Self improvement means to improve, through personal efforts, one’s status, temperament, and knowledge in various areas of learning by the individual. Just as sports enhance an athlete’s performance, self-improvement serves to enhance a person’s potential and, consequently, their productivity in all aspects of life. This concept leads to making strides in personal growth and adds value to human capital, which is the set of personal characteristics that drive an individual to succeed in interpersonal, intrapersonal, and economic contexts.
The areas related to self improvement include:
- time management
- organization
- ability to delegate tasks to others
- effective communication according to the context
- commitment to achieving a specific goal.
Being able to develop these aspects of life at a personal level means being able to apply the same skills in a work environment. Working on self improvement means finding daily practices to intelligently structure the day and related commitments. This will be particularly useful for those who are working remotely, whether for a company or independently: they can efficiently manage their time without wasting a moment more.

Self improvement: why developing it is important
Feeling good about oneself means being more receptive to external stimuli, more productive, and more reactive. Having a fulfilling personal life enables being adequately prepared to tackle stress from both personal and professional spheres in a prompt and focused manner.
This is where self improvement comes into play, as it enables balanced management of one’s time and commitments, individual temperament, and the creation of the right balance between personal and professional development, efficient work commitment, and leisure. If self-esteem is, as the word suggests, an estimate of ourselves, self-improvement increases our “personal value scale,” or our perception of ourselves, leading to an ability to present ourselves to others in a more confident, attentive, and curious manner. Individuals who disregard the personal sphere, keeping it completely separate from the professional one, risk being dragged chaotically by daily events without carving out space to reflect or ask themselves what can be done to truly improve their situation. Such individuals are more likely to experience frustration or other negative feelings that hinder personal development. Conversely, if you have an organized, winning, and proactive mindset, it will also reflect in your work, achieving greater career results.
Self improvement: goals to achieve
The most common self improvement goals to achieve include:
- maintaining psychophysical health
- increasing skills and knowledge in various fields
- working on interpersonal relationships and increasing the level of commitment during work.
Becoming aware of these aspects of life and working on them will make you a better person in every aspect, making you more satisfied and ready to embrace new challenges. Below, I analyze each of these points.
Being fit and healthy
Self improvement starts with being physically and mentally fit. This aspect leads to gaining greater self-confidence. Physical activity is essential to relieve accumulated stress: it helps clear the mind, facilitates sleep, oxygenates the body, and promotes toxin elimination.
Physical activity doesn’t only mean formal sports; it includes keeping the body in motion. Hence, it’s beneficial to make a habit of walking for at least 30 minutes a day, opting for stairs instead of elevators, increasing fluid intake, and being mindful of nutrition, avoiding excessive consumption of fatty and cholesterol-rich foods.
Eating balanced meals and reducing sedentary behavior help free and clear the mind.
Refining your skills
There are skills directly related to the profession performed, and there are other skills acquired throughout life on a personal level. These cross-cutting skills will be very important because, although not directly related to the work activity, they serve to broaden horizons and be more clear in the reasoning carried forward. To develop this aspect of self improvement, a good dose of curiosity is necessary, thanks to which one is inclined to learn about new topics and delve into those already known.

Those who manage to develop a general interest in the world will find it much easier to constantly update themselves in the working world, a necessary condition for those who want to advance their careers.
In particular, digital jobs require constant updating and a propensity for continuous research as the Web constantly transforms.

Improving personal relationships
Developing interpersonal skills means being able to listen to others and manage the social dynamics in which one finds themselves. If you learn to manage this aspect of self-improvement, then you certainly won’t have much difficulty working in teams, a very important characteristic, especially in the digital field, where effective and appropriate communication with colleagues, being able to empathize with them, is crucial. In particular, this social ability is related to managerial positions.
Developing a deeper level of commitment and challenging oneself
There is a big difference between spending hours at the company and the actual results achieved. Often, one tends to do the bare minimum and stay in their comfort zone, without pushing themselves towards new situations.
Unfortunately, it’s precisely when one puts in effort that personal and professional growth can happen. Those who want to advance professionally must necessarily make greater efforts.
Furthermore, more and more companies aim to highlight achieved goals, rather than just hours spent in the office. Learning to challenge oneself by taking on new situations is the right mindset to face any stress and manage it intelligently and functionally.

How to better self improvement
Below, I am going to make a list of some useful tips for working on self improvement effectively: helpful for those who want to take the first steps towards personal growth and start seeing initial personal results.

Focus on a few goals and handle them one at a time
Often, one finds themselves wanting to manage many things at once, but in the end, they’re not able to organize themselves. That’s why, to start, it’s good not to “bite off more than you can chew,” but instead, focus on a few tasks to achieve and carry them out exhaustively.
If you start wanting to do too many things together, you risk increasing stress levels and getting frustrated much sooner, as you won’t be able to complete the many projects you’ve started.
That’s why it’s good to introduce a few changes at a time in your daily life: give your body and mind time to automate them before continuing to load up with stimuli and information.
The same goes for sports: if you want to start a workout to get back in shape, it’s good to follow a plan that includes a few workouts per week at the beginning, and then gradually increase intensity, to accustom the body and muscles to the effort and not overload them at the beginning, increasing the risk of injuries and abandoning the activity before even getting into the real workouts.
Similarly, the mind needs time to adjust to changes and increase commitment.
Define your goals and improve yourself
To define the goals to be achieved, it’s very useful to consider the S.M.A.R.T. model, which stands for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-based.
Below, I explain more in-depth what each of these attributes means.
Specific (specific): you need to clearly outline what you want;
Measurable (measurable): it’s good to monitor your progress so you can see the results achieved, and the improvements made, and realize that your efforts yield results;
Achievable (achievable): plan achievable results based on your possibilities and abilities;
Relevant (relevant): the chosen goal must have a certain relevance for those who choose to pursue it: if you’re not truly motivated to work towards something, you’ll likely abandon the project more easily;
Time-based (time-bound): the goal you want to achieve must have a specific deadline, otherwise, you risk losing sight of it in the long term.
Don’t do everything alone!
If you want to make changes within your lifestyle, it’s impossible to think that you can do it all by yourself in everything. When you want to work on self-improvement, often you are inclined to adopt two opposite but both negative attitudes: wanting to do everything immediately and not starting at all.
Unfortunately, these attitudes are not positive, and to make a change, you need a good dose of humility, admitting that you are not capable of carrying out every self improvement activity by yourself.
Remember that it won’t be an easy task: you can’t be highly skilled in all fields, and therefore, it’s more productive to rely on an expert in a specific area. The “do-it-yourself” approach requires an amount of effort and commitment that often results in more frustration than satisfaction.
This lesson is well taught by the digital world, where you win when you work in teams, while it’s impossible to think you can do everything alone to achieve any result.
